Overview of Australia’s Visa Pathways

Where talent meets opportunity—and GRIA clears the path.

Why Visa Pathways Matter

Behind every successful international hire is more than just a job offer—it’s a visa strategy.
Australia’s skilled migration system is powerful, but complex. Choose the wrong pathway, and you risk delays, cost blowouts, or losing great talent. But with the right support, you unlock not just workers—but loyalty, longevity, and compliance peace of mind.

At GRIA, we simplify the system. Our team—alongside our expert immigration division, AIA—navigates the full visa lifecycle for you. We make sure that employers, candidates, and partners are on the right visa, right from the start.

Main Types of Australian Work Visas

Skills in Demand (SID) Visa – Subclass 482

Australia’s newest flagship visa for employer-sponsored skilled workers.
Introduced in December 2024, the SID visa replaces the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa and sets a new standard for flexibility and clarity.

Key features:

  • Three streams: Specialist Skills, Core Skills, and Skills in Demand Labour Agreement
  • Clear PR pathway: Most streams link directly to permanent residency
  • Fast-tracked experience: Just 1 year in your nominated occupation required
  • Full family inclusion: Dependents included with study and work rights
  • Duration: Up to 4 years (5 years for Hong Kong passport holders)

GRIA ensures all candidates on the GRIAworks platform are SID-ready and properly matched to eligible roles.

Permanent Skilled Migration (PR Pathways)

Ideal for candidates seeking a direct route to Australian permanent residency without employer sponsorship.

  • Subclass 189 – Skilled Independent Visa:
Points-tested, no sponsor required. For high-demand skilled occupations.
  • Subclass 190 – Skilled Nominated Visa:
Sponsored by a State or Territory Government. Requires nomination.
  • Subclass 191 – Skilled Regional Visa:
PR pathway for regional provisional visa holders who meet income and stay requirements.

We support eligible candidates on temporary visas to transition into PR pathways—keeping your workforce stable, long-term.

Graduate, Training & Provisional Visas

  • Subclass 485 – Temporary Graduate Visa:
For international graduates in Australia. Up to 4 years of post-study work rights.
  • Subclass 407 – Training Visa:
For structured workplace-based training or capacity-building programs.

We work with training providers and employers to help upskill talent while staying compliant.

Other Work-Linked Visas

  • DAMA (Designated Area Migration Agreements):
Regional visa concessions under subclass 482, 494, and 186.
  • Subclass 858 – Global Talent Visa:
For high-performing individuals driving innovation and tech outcomes.
  • Subclass 417 & 462 – Working Holiday Visas:
Short-term work and travel for young adults from eligible countries.
  • Subclass 188 – Business Innovation & Investment Visa:
For business owners, investors, and entrepreneurs. (Note: certain streams capped or restricted after July 2024, but not fully closed.)

GRIAworks for businesses needing niche, regional or high-talent solutions—our partners bring the right options to the table.

Family & Partner Visas (Brief Overview)

While GRIA focuses on skilled migration, our AIA division supports the families and partners behind every applicant:

  • Subclass 820/801 – Partner Visa (onshore)
  • Subclass 309/100 – Partner Visa (offshore)
  • Subclass 143 – Contributory Parent Visa
  • Subclass 103 – Non-Contributory Parent Visa

We guide families through the emotional and practical steps of migrating together—ensuring they feel seen, supported, and secure.

Key Considerations When Choosing a Visa

The best visa isn’t always the obvious one. GRIA considers:

Eligibility – Skills, experience, English, health, and age
Sponsorship – Employer approvals, job role relevance
Occupation Lists – MLTSSL, STSOL, ROL compliance (formerly CSOL)
Processing Times – Typically 21 business days to 12 months, depending on subclass
Cost – From a few hundred to several thousand AUD
Long-Term Options – PR transition? Family inclusion? Regional migration?

We don’t just find a visa—we find your visa strategy.
